Tassal the first aquaculture company in Australia to set science-based targets

As we finalise our 14th annual Sustainability Report, we are proud to share our science-based emission reduction targets validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), marking a significant milestone in our sustainability journey, and exceeding our regulatory and certification requirements related to energy and emissions.
The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaborative effort between the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Science-based targets (SBTs) provide a clear and credible pathway for businesses to set meaningful and actionable emissions reduction goals in line with the Paris Agreement. By aligning our strategies with the latest climate science, we can ensure we are operating as responsibly as possible and future-proof our business growth.
Our achievement in setting and validating SBTs is particularly significant for the Australian aquaculture industry. As the sector continues to grow, sustainable practices are essential for ensuring long-term success and environmental stewardship. By setting SBTs, we not only enhance our sustainability journey but also set a benchmark for other companies in the industry to follow. To our knowledge, we are the first Australian aquaculture company to make this global commitment. This leadership helps drive the entire sector towards more responsible and sustainable practices, contributing to the overall health of marine ecosystems and the global fight against climate change.
Our emission reduction targets can be found at Ambitious corporate climate action – Science Based Targets Initiative
Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources owned or controlled by Tassal. Scope 2 GHG emissions are indirect, occurring at the facility where the electricity is generated. Our SBT commitment is to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.60% by FY33 from a FY23 base year.
Scope 3 emissions are indirect to Tassal’s operations but occur as a consequence of our activities from sources not owned or controlled by us. Our SBT commitment is to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased good and services, upstream transportation and distribution, and waste generated in operations by 32.50% by FY33 from a FY23 base year. We also have a supplier engagement target for 75% of Tassal suppliers by emissions to have science-based targets by 2028.
Our Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) targets cover emissions and removals related to agriculture, land-use change, and land management. Our SBT commitment is to reduce absolute scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions by 39.40% by FY33 from a base year of FY23.
Our targets also include a commitment to no deforestation across our primary commodities by 2025.
